titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the felting of articles made of keratinic fibres
abstract Articles, e.g. berets and blankets, formed wholly or partly from keratinic fibres are felted by subjecting them to a mechanical treatment in a bath comprising a hydrocarbon or a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. a heavy petroleum fraction with a boiling point between 100 DEG and 300 DEG C, trifluorotrichlorethane, trichlorethane, dichloropropane, dichloro difluoroethane, trichlorethylene, tetrachlorethylene and dichlorethylene, until the desired degree of setting is obtained, by repeatedly immersing them in the treatment bath. The bath may also contain water in a quantity equivalent to 20-60% of the dry weight of the articles treated and an anionic surface active agent, e.g. an aliphatic alcohol sulphate, a cationic surface active agent, e.g. a quaternary ammonium derivative, or a non-ionic surface active agent, e.g. an oxyethylene derivative. The intensiveness of the applied mechanical action being varied by reducing the volume of the treatment bath thus modifying the effect of dropping the articles into it. The articles may also be subjected to agitation while in the treatment bath. The process may be effected in an apparatus comprising a vat for containing the treatment liquid and a rotary drum partly immersed in the treatment liquid, the drum being rotated either in a single direction or alternately first one way and then the other and being fitted with internal blades or other means which ensure that when the apparatus is in operation the articles are carried round only as far as a point near the top of the drum. The apparatus may also comprise means for heating the bath, e.g. an electric or steam heater, means for circulating the treatment liquid, e.g. a pump and feed tank, filters to hold back any solid particles that might be carried along during the process, means for drying the treated goods, e.g. a hot-air drier, and a system for recovering the hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon. The treatment may be carried out at 30 DEG -70 DEG C for from 30 minutes to 3 hours at a bath ratio between the weight of the articles dry (in Kg) and the volume of the treatment bath (in litres) of between 1:25 and 1:1. This bath ratio may be varied during the treatment. The felting process may be supplemented by one or more associated treatments, e.g. waterproofing, bleaching and softening with the aid of a substituted or unsubstituted amine, or a mothproofing, antistatic or bactericidal treatment.
