abstract Potassium is produced by reducing potassium hydroxide, potassium aluminate or potassium silicate in the solid state with silicon in the presence of lime in a quantity sufficient to neutralise the silica formed in the reaction. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of at least 1,000 DEG C. and in an atmosphere of inert gas such as argon, helium or nitrogen. Silica may be added to the starting materials in which case the amount of lime is suitably increased. If the starting materials contain water, e.g. through hydration, the amount of silicon is increased to compensate.
