titleOfInvention | Production of acenaphthenone |
abstract | Acenaphthenone is produced by dehydrogenation of acenaphthenol in the presence of a catalyst, suitably Raney nickel, in an aqueous medium or a hydrocarbon medium whose boiling point is lower than that of the acenaphthenone. The resulting crude acenaphthenone may be oximated with hydroxylamine sulphate or hydrochloride. Unreacted acenaphthenol is then precipitated together with its contaminants, acenaphthene and acenaphthylene with alcohol or alkali and the precipitate is filtered. The filtrate is acidified to pH 3-4 whereon pure acenaphthenone oxime is precipitated from the filtrate. |
