titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the Art of Producing Aluminium Chloride.
abstract 109,790. Standard Oil Co., (Assignees of Barnett, M , and Burgess, L.). Aug. 14, 1916, [Convention date]. Aluminium chloride is prepared by the action of hydrochloric acid gas on aluminium carbide with or without metallic aluminium, at a temperature of about 600-900‹ C. The apparatus described comprises a furnace 12 enclosing a retort 14 surmounted by a heating-chamber 17. The material to be treated is fed through a hopper 18 into the chamber 17, and by operating slides 21, 22 is passed through a hopper 20 into the retort 14. The retort is heated by burners 13 which may be fed by the combustible gas produced in the process, this gas being returned from the condensers by a pipe 13<a>. The residue is removed from the retort through an opening 24 closed by a plug 26. Hydrochloric acid gas is supplied by a pipe 15, and the volatilized aluminium chloride escapes by a pipe 27 to condensers 28, one of which, having a baffle 29, is shown.
