abstract Grid-type objects e.g. nuclear fuel elements, are made from a cermet by filling a can having a plurality of mandrels spaced therein with the cermet, confining the can externally to prevent expansion in any direction and simultaneously, at a temperature below that at which the metal and ceramic of the cermet react, applying force to the ends of the cans and mandrels, longitudinally thereof so as to shorten the can and mandrels, thereby increasing their thickness and compressing the cermet. The metal of the cermet may be W, Mo or stainless steel and the ceramic may be uranium or plutonium dioxide (or mixtures thereof), uranium or plutonium carbide (or mixtures thereof), or uranium or plutonium nitride (or mixtures thereof). The mandrels may be mild steel, and may have a metal coating e.g. applied by vapour deposition, which remains on the passages formed after dissolution of the mandrels. The metal coating is preferably the same metal as the metal component of the cermet.
