Sustained-release pharmaceutical tablets are prepared by forming an emulsion of a molten mixture of mono- and di-saccharides containing 1-4% water in a molten, non-toxic, thermoplastic substance which is substantially insoluble in gastric or intestinal juices, e.g. a natural or synthetic elastomer such as natural rubber, chicle gum, cis- or trans-polybutadiene or polyisobutylene, cooling the mass and forming it into tablets after addition of therapeutically active ingredients. The active ingredients may be added to the sugar mixture before emulsification or, the emulsified mass may be cooled, subdivided and mixed with the active material, the mixture being formed into tablets which are subsequently sintered by heating. |
