titleOfInvention Process for the production of high molecular weight thermoplastic polycarbonates by the transesterification process
abstract In the manufacture of polycarbonates by trans-esterification of a diester of carbonic acid with a dihydric phenol or of a bis-aryl, bis-alkyl or bis-cycloalkyl carbonate of a dihydric or bis-cycloalkyl carbonate of a dihydric phenol by itself or with a dihydric phenol, there is used an acid catalyst having a pK value at 25 DEG C. of between 2 and 10 and which is (a) an organic acid, (b) an acid reacting ester, salt or ester-salt of an organic acid or inorganic oxyacid. Specified catalysts are phenyl phosphonic acid and its acid alkali metal salts, phenylboric acid and its acid alkali metal salts, quinoline - 5 - sulphonic acid, quinoline - 8 - sulphonic acid, 2-hydroxycarbazole-sulphonic acid - 7, aniline - N - methane - sulphonic acid, aniline - N - phenylsulphonic acid - 4, N-methylamino - ethane sulphonic acid, stearic acid, heptadecane - 1:8 - dicarboxylic acid and its acid alkali metal salts, 4-phthalimidododecanoic acid, phosphoric acid monophenyl ester and its acid alkali metal salts and 2-N-phenylamino benzoic acid. Preferably transesterification is effected at 160-320 DEG C., the temperature being raised gradually and the pressure being reduced gradually to a final value of about 1 mm. of Hg. Examples describe the manufacture of polycarbonates by transesterifying (1) and (2) Diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol-A or a mixture thereof with 1,1-bis-(4 - hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexane; (3) Bisphenol - A - bisphenyl carbonate.
