titleOfInvention Maleinized oil product
abstract A maleinized oil reaction product is formed by the steps of (1) reacting a drying oil with 8-15% of maleic anhydride at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C., (2) maintaining the maleinized oil at a temperature of at least 250 DEG C. for a time sufficient to raise its viscosity to a minimum as set out below, but not sufficient to cause gelation: .Maleic Anhydride.Minimum viscosity .%.at 25 DEG C. in cp .8.700 .9.1000 .10.1500 .11.1900 .12.2500 .13.3100 .14.3700 .15.4500 (3) mixing and reacting the maleinized oil with water, and (4) mixing and reacting the hydrolyzed maleinized oil with a base, e.g. diethylamine, to neutralize at least part of the carboxylic acid groups. The drying oils have an iodine value above 90 and may be linseed oil. The maleinized oil may be dispersed in water which also contains an alkyl monoether of (di)-ethylene glycol, furfuryl alcohol, dioxan, 3-methoxy - 4 - methylpentanone - 2, a latex of an acrylate, e.g. ethyl polymer or styrenebutadiene copolymer, lampblack, talc, strontium chromate, lead silico chromate, barium sulphate, bentonite, manganese naphthenate in mineral spirits and/or tris(hydroxy-methyl) nitromethane.ALSO:A phosphatized steel panel is coated with a water-dispersed composition containing a maleinized oil reaction product formed by the steps of (1) reacting a drying oil with 8-15% of maleic anhydride at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C, (2) maintaining the maleinized oil at a temperature of at least 250 DEG C for a time sufficient to raise its viscosity to a minimum as set out below but not sufficient to cause gelation:- .Maleic Anhydride%.Minimum Viscosity ..at 25 DEG C in cp .8.700 .9.1000 .10.1500 .11.1900 .12.2500 .13.3100 .14.3700 .15.4500 (3) mixing and reacting the maleinized oil with water, and (4) mixing and reacting the hydrolyzed maleinized oil with a base to neutralize at least part of the carboxylic acid groups. The composition may also contain an alkyl monoether of (di)-ethylene glycol furfuryl alcohol, dioxane, 3-methoxy-4-methyl pentanone-2, latex of an acrylate, e.g. ethyl polymer or styrene-butadiene copolymer, lampblack, talc strontium chromate, lead silico chromate, barium sulphate, bentonite, manganese naphthenate in mineral spirits and/or tris (hydroxymethyl) nitromethane.
