abstract 1,095,690. Punching; making punches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1966, No. 40132/66. Headings B3A and B3W. [Also in Division B4] A method of punching perforations in a sheet 5, Fig. 3, of metal, paper or plastics material which is attached to a backing 8 of cardboard, aluminium or plastics material comprises reciprocating a punch 4 with sufficient power and length of stroke to perforate the sheet 5 and enter the backing 8 making an indentation in the backing which receives the punched-out portion of the sheet 5. The sheet 5 and backing 8 are mounted on a coordinate table 6 controlled by a data-tape programme for movement normal to the line of stroke of the punch such that the distance moved between successive punching strokes is not more than one tenth of the diameter of the extremity of the punch. In an example, a pattern is cut in a phosphor bronze sheet having a thickness of 0À2 mm. attached to a cardboard backing having a thickness of 1 mm. by reciprocating a punch with an amplitude of 2 mm, the punch having a diameter of 0À1 mm. and a length of 2 mm. The punch is made from a steel sewing machine needle by removing the section 1, Fig. 1, containing the needle eye 2 and grinding down the end part 3, Fig. 2, of the remainder of the needle 4 to a cylinder of 0À1 mm. diameter over a length of about 2 mm.
