titleOfInvention Improvements in the production of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides by catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons
abstract A vanadyl phosphate catalyst for the oxidation of hydrocarbons, particularly olefins to dicarboxylic acid anhydrides comprises, vanadyl phosphate (UO3)2(PO4)2, prepared by reacting in aqueous solution a vanadyl compound having an anion derived from a non-oxidizing acid which is more volatile than phosphoric acid, with phosphoric acid or phosphorus pentoxide in such amounts that the catalyst contains a ratio of one mole of V2O5 to one to two moles of P2O5, and from 0.05 to 5% (by weight of the vanadyl phosphate) of one or more alkali metal compounds. The anions of the vanadyl compounds used are fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, acetate or sulphate. The alkali metal compounds used are lithium acetate; bromide; carbonate; chloride; hydroxide; iodide; oxide; sulphate and meta-vanadate and salts of sodium and potassium.ALSO:In the vapour phase oxidation of olefins by molecular oxygen to dicarboxylic acid anhydrides there is employed a catalyst comprising vanadyl phosphate containing a ratio of one mole of V2O5 to one to two moles of P2O5, and from 0.05 to 5% (by weight of the vanadyl phosphate) of one or more alkali metal compounds. The olefins used contain 4 to 6 carbon atoms and include butadiene-1,3, butene-1, 3-methyl butene-1, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene. In an example, butene-2 is oxidized to maleic anhydride.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises vanadyl phosphate on a carrier the vanadyl phosphate (VO3)2(PO4)2 being prepared by reacting in aqueous solution a vanadyl compound having an anion derived from a non-oxidising acid which is more volatile than phosphoric acid with phosphoric acid or phosphorus pentoxide in such amounts that the catalyst contains a ratio of one mole of V2O5 to one to two moles of P2O5, and from 0.05 to 5% (by weight of the vanadyl phosphate) of one or more alkali metal compounds. The anions of the vanadyl compounds used are fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, acetate or sulphate. The alkali metal compounds used are lithium acetate; bromide; carbonate; chloride; hydroxide; iodide; oxide; sulphate and meta-vanadate and salts of sodium and potassium. The catalyst is deposited on one or more inert carriers such as alumina, silicon carbide corundum and silica gel.
