titleOfInvention | A dry powdery nonblocking vinyl ester-ethylene copolymer compositions and process for the production thereof |
abstract | Vinyl ester/ethylene copolymers in finely divided, dry, non-sticky form are prepared by adding to a wet, finely divided copolymer of ethylene and a vinyl ester, containing 3 to 7 carbon atoms, of an aliphatic carboxylic acid in a ration of 20: 80 to 70: 30 by weight, (I) 2 to 30 parts by weight of an antisticking agent selected from (A) a sulphate, phosphite, silicate or carbonate of lead, (B) a lead, cadmium, barium, calcium, zinc or tin salt of a carboxylic acid having 10 to 20 carbon atoms, phthalic acid, salicylic acid or naphthenic acid, (C) a dialkyl tin dialphatic monocarboxylate, dialkyl tin maleate or a dialkyl tin aliphatic monocarboxylate maleate wherein the alkyl group has 3 to 10 carbon atoms and the aliphatic monocarboxylic acid has 10 to 20 carbon atoms, (D) calcium carbonate, clay, kaolin, talc or silica, (E) an aliphatic alcohol having 10 to 20 carbon atoms and (F) a fatty acid or an alkyl or polyxyethylene ester or amide thereof wherein the fatty acid has 10 to 20 carbon atoms and the alkyl group 3 to 18 carbon atoms; and (II) 2 to 50 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride powder of particle size less than 40 microns per 100 parts by weight of said copolymer; and then drying the mixture. The copolymer may contain up to 20 weight per cent of vinyl chloride, or acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic or maleic acid or an ester or anhydride thereof; and may be obtained by an aqueous suspension polymerization process. Many agents are listed, and examples describe the addition to copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate, optionally together with vinyl chloride prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of azodiisobutyronitrile, polyvinyl alcohol and sodium polyacrylate; to copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of potassium persulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium hydrogen phosphate; and to copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate or ethylene and vinyl propionate, optionally together with vinyl chloride, as reprecipitated from benzene solution by methanol; of polyvinyl chloride powder and barium stearate, tribasic lead sulphate, dibasic lead phosphite, basic lead silicate, lead hydroxy carbonate, dibasic lead phthalate, dibasic lead stearate, silica modified lead silicate, lead salicylate, lead naphthenate, lead stearate, cadmium ricinoleate, barium laurate, cadmium oleate, zinc stearate, dibutyl tin distearate, dibutyl tin maleate, dioctyl tin oleate maleate, calcium carbonate, clay, kaolin, talc, stearic acid, palmitic acid, butyl stearate, cetyl stearate, polyoxyethylene stearate, stearamide, palmitamide, methylene N,N1-bis-stearamide, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, cadmium stearate, cadmium laurate, calcium stearate, barium ricinoleate, dibutyl tin dilaurate, octyl stearate, oleamide, tin stearate, calcium ricinoleate, zinc ricinoleate, zinc laurate, cadmium laurate, tin oleate, dioctyl tin dilaurate, dioctyl tin maleate, dibutyl tin laurate maleate, dioctyl tin stearate maleate, silica, oleic acid, butyl palmitate, cetyl oleate and polyoxyethylene palmitate. |
