titleOfInvention Unsaturated des-a steroid compounds, and processes for their preparation
abstract Novel des-A-steroids having the formulae <FORM:1094807/C2/1> <FORM:1094807/C2/2> wherein R and R1 each represent an alkyl radical containing 1-4 carbon atoms, are obtained by subjecting a corresponding 5-methoxy-des - A - 18,19 - dinor - pregna - 5,7,9,16 - tetraen-20-one to reductive alkylation by reaction with an alkyl halide in the presence of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal solution in liquid ammonia to form 5-methoxy-13b ,17a -dialkyl-des - A - 18,19 - dinor - pregna - 5,7,9 - trien-20-one and reducing the latter with a mixed hydride so as to form the desired 5-methoxy-13b ,17a - dialkyl - 20 - hydroxy - des - A - 19 - nor-pregna-5,7,9-triene.
