titleOfInvention A process for the preparation of aluminium halohydrides useful as constituents of catalytic system for the stereospecific polymerization of unsaturated compounds
abstract Aluminium halohydrides complexed with a Lewis base, having the formula AlXmHn.B wherein X is Cl, Br or I; m and n are each 1 or 2 and their sum equals 3, and B is a Lewis base selected from ethers and tertiary amines; are obtained by reacting sodium or potassium hydride with an aluminium halide in an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of the said Lewis base and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an organo-metalic compound of aluminium selected from those containing at least 2 metal-to-carbon bonds, the mole ratio of Lewis base to aluminium halide being not higher than 1.5:1 and the amount of catalyst being between 0.5 and 5 mols. per 100 mols. of alkali metal hydride, at a temperature not greater than 120 DEG C. The process may be a single or two-step process. In the latter, in the first step alkali metal hydride is reacted with a portion of the aluminium hydride at a temperature which is higher than that used in the second step, in which the temperature is lowered and the remainder of the halide is added. Examples are given for the production of the complexes.
