titleOfInvention Tablet colouring compositions
abstract An opaque colour coating composition for medicinal tablets comprises an aqueous sugar syrup, from 0.1 to 15% of a water insoluble opaque colouring agent, and 0.05 to 1.0% of polyvinylpyrrolidone dissolved in said syrup, the percentages being by weight of the total composition. The preferred sugar is sucrose, suitably at 85% concentration by weight of the syrup. Colouring agents are non-toxic lakes or pigments, such as FD and C: Red No. 4 lake, Red No. 3 lake, Blue No. 2 lake and Green No. 2 lake, or Ebonine black (charcoal). The composition preferably includes an opacifier, such as chalk or titanium dioxide. The polyvinylpyrrolidone is to reduce the brittleness of the coating after drying.ALSO:Medicinal tablets are coated with an opaque colour coating composition comprising an aqueous sugar syrup, from 0.1 to 15% of a water-insoluble opaque colouring agent, and from 0.05 to 1.0% of polyvinylpyrrolidone dissolved in said syrup, the percentages being by weight of the total composition. The composition may also contain 0.5 to 3.0% of an opacifier such as chalk or titanium dioxide. Suitable colouring agents include commercial non-toxic lakes or pigments, such as FD and C red, blue and green lakes, or charcoal (ebonine black). The sugar is preferably sucrose, at e.g. 85% by weight concentration in the syrup. The coating is applied by conventional pan coating procedures by spraying or pouring on to the tablets, and then dried with warm air. The tablets preferably have been given a smoothing sub-coating of e.g. powdered sugar in syrup, after primary sealing, with a shellac-polyvinyl-pyrrolidone coating. Examples are given for coating tablets containing, as medicaments, bendroflumethiazide; rauwolfia serpentina; and fluphenazine hydrochloride.
