titleOfInvention Explosive
abstract An explosive composition comprises a mixture of crystalline cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and/or cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), nitrocellulose, and a phosphate or carboxylate ester. The nitramine is of particle size below 200 microns and is present in an amount of up to 85% by weight; the high viscosity soluble nitrocellulose is present in an amount of 0.5 to 15% by weight; the ester, which is present in an amount of 10 to 34.5% by weight and acts as a plasticizer, may be a phosphate ester O = P-(OR)3 and/or a carboxylate ester X(OOCCH3)m(OOCR)k where R and X are C1 to C8 organic radicals, preferably hydrocarbyl m is 0 or 1, and k is 2 or 3. The preferred ester is tributyl 2-acetoxy-1,2,3-propanetricarboxylate, but other suitable compounds are listed. RDX may be mixed with water and part of the mixture coated with the ester. A small amount of lead chromate is added as pigment, followed by the nitrocellulose and the remainder of the wet RDX. The blending may take place at 100-150 DEG F. and yields dry non-consolidated granules which are moulded, rolled, or extruded into flexible sheets, cords, or blocks. The products retain their flexibility at low temperatures.
