titleOfInvention | Polymerisation process |
abstract | Polymers of substituted alkenes are made by contacting the alkene with an organo-metallic compound of a metal of Group IVa to VIa of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table of Elements which contains at least one p -allylic ligand. Suitable compounds are tris-(p -allyl) chromium, tris-(p -methallyl) chromium, tris-(p -crotyl) chromium, titanium-(p -methallyl), dimolybdenum tetra-(p -allyl) and bis-(p -allyl) (acetylacetonato) chromium. The organo-metallic compound may be formed in situ. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or the substituted alkene may be dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon or ester. Specified monomers are methyl methacrylate, chloroprene, and acrylonitrile and mixtures thereof with ethylene, propylene, butene-1, or butadiene. Exemplified monomers are methyl methacrylate, chloroprene and acrylonitrile. Stereostructures are given in examples.ALSO:The preparations of organo-metallic compounds of metals of Group IVA to VIA of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table of Elements which contain at least one p -allylic ligand are described. In particular: (1) tris-(p -allyl) chromium by reacting anhydrous CrCl3 with allyl magnesium chloride; (2) dimolybdenum tetra-(p -allyl) by reacting MoCl5 with allyl magnesium chloride; (3) tetrakis-(p -methallyl) titanium by reacting TiCl4 with methallyl magnesium chloride; (4) tris-(p -methallyl) chromium by reacting CrCl3 and methallyl magnesium chloride; and (5) bis-(p -allyl) (acetylacetonate) chromium by reacting tris-(p -allyl) chromium and tris-(acetylacetonate) chromium. |
