titleOfInvention | A process for sulphonating and/or sulphating organic compounds containing one or more hydroxyl groups |
abstract | 1,089,882. Controlling chemical reactions. MO OCH DOMSJO A.B. Feb. 2, 1965 [Feb. 4, 1964], No. 4559/65. Heading B1X. [Also in Division G3] In a process for sulphonating and/or sulpating an alkyl or alkylaryl compound containing one or more hydroxyl groups, and alkylene oxide adducts thereof, or mixtures containing these compounds, by reaction with a sulphur trioxide gas mixture in a reactor 1, the sulphonating and/or sulphating degree is controlled by signals obtained from a conductivity measuring cell 13 arranged in the product outlet flow, in such a way as to keep the conductivity of the reaction product added constant. A relation between the conductivity and the sulphonating degree is shown graphically in Figs. 1-3 (not shown) and therefrom the correct conductivity for any desired sulphonating degree may be inferred, and so the correct amount of unsulphonated substance introduced. A control device 14 maintains the conductivity at a set value, any deviation causing valve V to alter the feed of unsulphonated substance. A cyclone 12 separates any residual gas from the product prior to cell 13. |
