titleOfInvention Process for the polymerization and copolymerization of compounds containing epoxy groups
abstract Homopolymers of alkylene oxides and copolymers of alkylene oxides with olefinically unsaturated monoepoxides are prepared by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a solvent and, as catalyst, an aluminium compound of formula Al.H.X.Y.Z, where X and Y are hydrogen, halogen or secondary aliphatic or aromatic amine residues, and Z is an ether or tertiary amine, and can be dispensed with when X and/or Y is a secondary amine residue. An elastomer may be prepared from propylene oxide allyl glycidyl ether copolymers, of the type obtained by the above process, by sulphur-curing copolymers containing 1.5 to 6% of allyl glycidyl ether units and which elastomer has a high structural regularity, as evidenced by X-ray crystallography, is capable of being crystallized under traction and has a tensile strength of at least 200 kgs./cm.2. The catalyst for the polymerization process may be used in conjunction with chelating agents and/or water. The solvent is benzene, toluene or an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon. Specified catalysts are aluminium trihydride, or monochloro- or dichloroaluminium hydrides, all of which have been formed into complexes with ethers or amines, monochloromonoamino - aluminium hydride, dimethylamino - aluminium hydride, and piperidino aluminium dihydride. Suitable chelating agents are acetylacetone, diacetone mono-oxime, dimethylglyoxime, acetonylacetone. Specified monomers are ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, butadiene monoxide, vinyl glycidyl ether, allyl glycidyl ether, glycidyl acrylates, glycidyl methacrylates, and epichlorohydrin.
