titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to formaldehyde copolymers
abstract A copolymer of molecular weight 10,000 to 100,000 contains in its structure (a) recurring oxymethylene groups and (b) from 0.01 to 7% of at least one recurring group derived from acetate having the formulae <FORM:1088948/C3/1> <FORM:1088948/C3/2> <FORM:1088948/C3/3> wherein R0 is an alkylene, substituted alkylene, arylene or aralkylene radical; R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen atom, a C1- 4 alkyl group, an aryl group, a halo-substituted aryl group, or an aralkyl group; R3, R4, R5 and R6 are each hydrogen atom, a C1- 12 alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group; m is 0, 1, 2 or 3; n is 0 or 1, and X is a halogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Terpolymers containing cyclic ethers, dialdehydes, diketones and alkylene dicarboxylates, preferably in amount from 0.2 to 3% of the terpolymer may also be prepared. The copolymers are prepared by contacting formaldehyde or thioxane with 0.05 to 20% of at least one acetal of the above formulae. The polymerization may take place in the presence of the usual polymerization initiators, particularly useful being boron trifluoride diethyl and di-n-butyl ethereates, in liquid reaction media, batchwise or continuously, under non-oxidizing conditions in the presence of an antioxidant. The initiator may be neutralized after polymerization and the product capped, e.g. by acylation, etherification, and cyanoethylation or otherwise stabilized such as by partial depolymerization. Examples are given of the polymerization of trioxane with (1) to (5) glyoxal-bis-(ethylene glycol acetal) in cyclohexane with borontrifluoride diethyl etherate as catalyst; (6) pyruvaldehyde-bis -(ethylene glycol acetal), (6) malonaldehyde-bis - (ethylene glycol acetal), (7) glutaraldehyde - bis - (ethylene glycol acetal), (9) and (10) glyoxal - bis - (ethyleneglycol acetal) in 1,3-dioxolane and cyclohexane using the same catalysts, (11) glyoxal-bis-(1,3-propanediol acetal and glyoxal - bis - (neopentyl glycol acetal), (12) glyoxal - bis - (neopentyl glycol acetal) and 1,3-dioxolane and of formaldehyde with (13) glyoxal - bis - (ethylene glycol acetal) and also containing (14) 1,3-dioxolane and of trioxane with (19) glyoxal-bis-(ethylene glycol acetal) and 2-phenyl-1-3-dioxolane, (20) 2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane and 1,3-dioxolane and (21) 2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane.
