titleOfInvention Polymerisation apparatus
abstract Apparatus for continuously polymerizing 1-olefins to highly crystalline polymers comprises a reactor having agitator means operable to maintain solid particulate polymer in suspension in liquid monomer, a catalyst slurry pumping device connected to said reactor, a pressurized liquid monomer source connected to said reactor, and means on said reactor for withdrawing the contents thereof at a predetermined rate comprising a chamber provided with inlet and outlet valves, sequentially operable to intermittently discharge predetermined amounts of polymer slurry from the reactor, said inlet valve being connected to a discharge port in the reactor. The catalyst slurry pumping device may be connected to the reactor by mounting means having a convex surface extending inwardly of said reactor and by conduit means extending through the reactor wall and mounting means and terminating flush with said convex surface. The liquid monomer source may be connected to pressure-sensitive valve means on said reactor automatically operative in response to pressure drops in the reactor. Apparatus is described and illustrated with respect to the polymerization of propylene in the presence of a slurry of a catalyst comprising ethyl aluminium dichloride, hexamethyl phosphoric triamide and titanium trichloride in toluene.
