titleOfInvention Manufacture of organic carboxy compounds
abstract An organic carboxy compound is produced by subjecting a compound having terminal olefinic unsaturation and containing three or more carbon atoms and at least one functional substituent (defined below) to reaction with an organic carboxylic acid free from ethylenic and acetylenic unsaturation, or with an anhydride salt or ester of such an acid, in the presence of a free-radical initiator as catalyst at elevated temperature. The functional substituent comprises one or more of halogen, nitrile, nitro, carboxy, carboxy ester, carbonamide, sulpho or sulphonamide. Examples describe the production of 5-chloro-, 5-bromo-, and 5-cyano-valeric acids from acetic acid and allyl chloride, bromide and cyanide respectively, of adipic acid from acetic acid and vinyl acetic acid, of 2 - methyl - 5 - chloro - and 2 - methyl - 5-cyano-valeric acids from acetic acid and methallyl chloride and cyanide respectively, and of 6-chlorocaproic acid from allyl chloride and propionic acid.
