titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of polyurethane foams
abstract Polyurethane foams are prepared by reaction an organic polyisocyanate with a polyester containing free hydroxyl groups and water and/or low boiling hydrocarbons or halogenated hydrocarbons as expanding agents wherein the polyester is obtained from a polycarboxylic acid prepared by addition at 160 DEG to 260 DEG C. of an a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acid or an anhydride, ester or amide thereof to a dimerized or polymerized fatty acid of an average M.W. of 400 to 800 and an acid value of 165 to 220 followed by subsequent esterification with an excess of polyhydric alcohol. Suitable dimerized fatty acids are those which have been obtained from naturally occurring unsaturated fatty acids with a chain lenght of 16 to 22 carbon atoms and suitable a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acids or their derivatives are acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, aconitic acid, itaconic acid, maleic anhydride, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, dimethyl maleate, diethyl fumarate, methyl itaconate, acrylamide, N-alkyl-acrylamides, methacrylamide, N-alkyl-methacrylamides and maleic acid imide. Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic di- or poly-hydroxy compounds may be used for the subsequent esterification. Aliphatic and aromatic polyisocyanates are the preferred polyisocyanate and the foaming reaction may be carried out in the presence of catalysts such as tertiary amines and organic tin compounds, and wetting agents.
