titleOfInvention | Treated pigments for long oil alkyd resin paints |
abstract | A pigment is treated by milling it with phthalic anhydride or o-, m- or p-phthalic acid or any mixture of these, before or after it is incorporated into a long oil alkyd paint medium. The treated pigment paint compositions so obtained may be subsequently blended ("stainer" technique) or the pigments may be blended by incorporation into a single paint ("comix" technique). The additive preferably amounts to 0.1-10 wt. per cent of the total pigment treated. The alkyd medium should have an oil length of 55-85%. Suitable pigments include azo, anthraquinonoid, oxazine and phthalocyanine pigments and TiO2. In examples, a and b copper phthalocyanine blue pigments and TiO2 are milled with 0.5 wt. per cent of o-phthalic acid each and a long oil soya penta alkyd, thinned with white spirit and containing a drier, using both " stainer " and "comix" techniques. In Examples 2-4, m and p phthalic acids are also used. In Examples 9-25 both pigments are treated before incorporation into the paint medium, or the TiO2 is untreated, phthalic anhydride being added to the blue pigment when this is in the form of a slurry with dilute H2SO4, or in lumps, or as dried press-cake, and to the TiO2 by grinding with the dry pigment. In Examples 26-28, two grades of rutile TiO2 are used and one of anatase. In Examples 29-33, the amount of o-phthalic acid added is varied from 0.1-1%. In Example 34 a long oil linseed penta alkyd is used. In Examples 35-39 other organic pigments are used: a metal-free azo, a disazo, an anthroquinonoid, a dioxazine, and a benzidine yellow pigment. |
