abstract | Polymers of C2-4 olefins are stabilized by adding 0.01 to 1.0 weight per cent based on the polymer of a mixture of 90 to 25 weight per cent of 2,4-dinonyl phenol and 10 to 75 weight per cent of 2,21-methylene bis(4,6-di-nonylphenol). Other stabilizers, e.g. sulphur compounds, organic phosphites such as triisodecyl, trioctyl, phenyl didecyl, diphenyl decyl and tri(p-nonylphenyl) phosphite, o-hydroxybenzophenones, 2-hydroxyphenyl benzotriazoles and tris - o - hydroxyphenyl - s - triazines; and lubricants, fillers and antistatic agents may also be added. In examples films of polypropylene, polyethylene or polyisobutylene are stabilized with (2) the phenol/bisphenol mixture; distearyl, dilauryl or lauryl stearyl dithiopropionate; together with (3) tris-(p-nonylphenyl) phosphite, phenyl didecyl phosphite or diphenyl decyl phosphite, or (4) 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxybenzophenone.ALSO:Mixtures of 90-25 weight per cent of 2,4-dinonylphenol and 75-10 weight per cent of 2,21-methylene bis(4,6-dinonylphenol) are prepared by reacting excess dinonylphenol with formaldehyde. In Example (1) 0.1 mole of commercial dinonylphenol is refluxed with 0.02 mole of para-formaldehyde in heptane in the presence of hydrochloric acid and a surface-active agent. |
