titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of lactams
abstract The invention comprises a process for the production of compounds of the general formula <FORM:1085076/C2/1> wherein R1 or R2 is hydrogen or lower alkoxy, R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and R4 is keto hydroxy or hydrogen and n is 1 or 2 where "lower" indicator radicals containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms by reaction of a substituted carbodiimide of the formula R1-N = C = N-R1 in which R1 is isopropyl, cyclohexyl or isobutyl, e.g. N,N1-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, with a Schiff's base of formula <FORM:1085076/C2/2> to effect ring closure. The Schiff's base of the formula may be prepared by the reaction of a compound of formula <FORM:1085076/C2/3> wherein R1 and R2 have the above meanings, with a compound of formula <FORM:1085076/C2/4> wherein R3 and R4 have the above meanings.
