A process for the sulphonating and/or sul phating of organic substances by reaction with sulphur trioxide comprises feeding to a reaction vessel, containing the organic substance, separ ately (1) SO3 in admixture with a diluent gas, such as air or residual gas from the reactor, and (2) an additional supply of diluent gas. The amount of diluent gas (2) introduced may be 0.5 to 4 times the amount of sulphur trioxide gas mixture. The organic substances may be alkyl aromatics, fatty alcohols, fatty alcohol polyglycol ethers, alkylphenols and alkylphenol polyglycol ethers, high-boiling aromatics, satur ated and unsaturated fatty acids and fat oils as well as mixture of these compounds. |
