titleOfInvention Oligomers of methacrylonitrile
abstract The invention comprises the compounds of formula <FORM:1083804/C2/1> where R is hydrogen or an aliphatic, cyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, which may be substituted, and n is 1-11; and their production by polymerizing methacrylonitrile in the presence of ROH, using as initiator a ROH solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkoxide and/or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide or alkoxide. The average degree of polymerization <\>bDP is given by <\>bDP=K(methacrylonitrile) /(ROH), where the brackets indicate molar concentrations and K is a constant \sE10 which depends on ROH. An aprotic solvent such as dimethylformamide or dimethylsulphoxide may be present. In examples ROH is methanol (K varying from 1.9 to 3.2, depending on specific conditions) or water.
