titleOfInvention Stable coating compositions
abstract Liquid coating compositions comprise a volatile organic solvent and a heat-curable polymeric material obtained by partially heat-reacting (a) an organic solvent-soluble acidic copolymer, with an acid No. of 10-150, of monomers including (I) an a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocyclic aryl hydrocarbon and/or a C1- 12 alkyl ester of an a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having an acid No. of 10-150, and (II) a monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid having 1 or 2 -CO2H groups per molecule, with (b) an organic solvent-soluble epoxy copolymer, containing more than one oxirane group per molecule and having an oxirane equivalent weight of 200-15,000, of monomers including (III) an a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocyclic aryl hydrocarbon and/or a C1- 12 alkyl ester of an a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, and (IV) a glycidyl ester of an a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, (a) and (b) are reacted in such proportions that the molar ratio of oxirane oxygen to carboxyl group is 0.1-1.0. Monomers specified are (II) acrylic and methacrylic acids, maleic and fumaric acids and their half-esters, and the vinyl half-esters of dicarboxylic acids, (IV) glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate, and (I and III) styrene, vinyltoluene, and alkyl acrylates and methacrylates. The compositions may also contain pigments, other synthetic resins; plasticizers; slip or anti-abrasion agents; waxes; metallic driers; dispersing, bodying, suspending and surface controlling agents. In the example, styrene/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid and styrene/methyl methacrylate/ethyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate copolymers are prepared in xylol using cumene hydroperoxide catalyst, thinned with xylol/butanol heated together and compounded with TiO2, diacetone alcohol, wax, silicone resin, i-propanol and xylol to give an enamel.ALSO:Liquid coating compositions comprising organic solvent solutions of the partial reaction products of (a) copolymers of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and (b) copolymers of glycidyl esters of a ,b -monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids, which may also contain pigments and other resins and conventional additives (see Division C3) may be applied to substrates, such as steel panels, by spraying, brushing, dipping and roller or flow coating and cured by baking.
