titleOfInvention | Selective hydrogenation process |
abstract | Alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained by hydrogenating alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbons at 100-300 DEG C. and 2-100 atmos. in the presence of a presulphided, supported nickel or platinum-group metal catalyst. The catalyst may contain 0.01-55% of metal, 0.0002-25% sulphur and optionally 0.01-5% of Li, Na, Rb, Cs, Mg, Ca and/or Sr e.g. on charcoal or alumina. An alkyl aromatic hydrocarbon is preferably present and in continuous processes, sulphur is preferably added to the feed. Examples describe the side chain hydrogenation of styrene, but-2-enyl benzene, allylbenzene and alphamethyl styrene. |
