titleOfInvention Acrylamide copolymer dispersions
abstract Aqueous dispersions of acrylamide copolymers are freed from monomeric acrylamide by adding to the dispersion a sulphite or bisulphite salt, in a proportion of at least 1 mol for each mol of free monomeric acrylamide initially present, and allowing reaction to proceed until substantially all of the free monomeric acrylamide has reacted. The comonomer component of the copolymer may be, for example, styrene, vinyl toluene, an acrylic or methacrylic ester, acrylonitrile, a vinyl ester, or vinyl or vinylidene chloride. Preferred salts are those of ammonia and alkali and alkaline earth metals, e.g. sodium sulphite, sodium bisulphite or sodium metabisulphite. The treatment may be effected at temperatures ranging from 0 DEG to 100 DEG C.
