titleOfInvention | Hydrazo-compounds |
abstract | A hydrazo-aromatic compound is obtained by reducing an aromatic nitro-compound in the presence of strong alkali (optionally in the presence of quinones) and an aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic glycol or polyol having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms. A carboxylic acid is obtained as a by-product. Specified glycols which may be used are ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, di- and tri-ethylene glycols, butane-1,2-diol, butane-2,3-diol, pentane-1,2,-diol, hexane-2,3-diol, cyclohexane-1,2-diol and mixtures of various polyethylene glycols obtained as by-products in the preparation of ethylene glycol. Specified polyols are glycerol and hexane-1,2,4-triol. Specified quinones are 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, 1,4-naphthoquinone and derivatives of 1,2- and 1,4-naphthoquinone. Specified organic solvents which may be used as diluents are dioxan, tetrahydrofuran and methanol. Examples are given for the production of hydrazobenzene and hydrazotoluene together with sodium oxalate and/or glycollate as by-product. |
