abstract Compounds of the general formulae <FORM:1082163/C2/1> <FORM:1082163/C2/2> and <FORM:1082163/C2/3> (wherein R represents an alkyl group, R1 represents a halogen atom or an alkyl, nitro or trifluoromethyl group, R2 and R3 each represent an alkyl, haloalkyl or azacycloalkylalkyl group or together represent an alkylene, aza-alkylene or N-alkylaza-alkylene group, and the broken lines denote optional substituents) and their acid addition salts are prepared by reacting an a - or b -oxime (or a mixture thereof) of the formula <FORM:1082163/C2/4> with a carbonyl compound of the formula <FORM:1082163/C2/5> or a polymer thereof, optionally followed by one or more of the steps (a)-if R is absent-N1-alkylation; (b) acid hydrolysis in the presence of a carbonyl compound of the above formula in which R2 and/or R3 is (are) present, thereby introducing R2 and/or R3 present in the second carbonyl compound; (c) treatment with a phosphorus trihalide or catalytic hydrogenation to remove the 3-oxygen atom; (d) reduction of a 3-desoxy compound to the 3,4-dihydro derivative; and (e) salt formation. The 1,2-dihydroquinazoline-3-oxide products may be converted to b -oximes of the above formula by acid hydrolysis. Certain of the compounds of the first general formula and their salts are hypotensive agents and compounds of the second and third general formulae and their salts are anticonvulsants and anorectic agents; they may be administered enterally or parenterally in the form of pharmaceutical preparations which contain them, with or without other (unspecified) active ingredients, in association with a carrier.
