titleOfInvention | Improvement relating to the production of organotin compounds |
abstract | A process for the production of organotin halides which comprises reacting metallic tin or an alloy thereof with an aliphatic chloride, bromide or iodide in the presence of a catalyst containing a divalent sulphur or selenium atom. The organotin halide may subsequently be hydrolyzed to yield organotin oxides or organostannoic acids. The catalyst used is an alkyl mercaptan having less than 20 carbon atoms or a metal mercaptide thereof, a dialkyl sulphide wherein each alkyl group has less than 20 carbon atoms, a thiocarboxylic acid or an ester or a salt thereof, a thiophosphite ester or an inorganic sulphur compound e.g. phosphorus pentasulphide, sulphur monochloride and even elemental sulphur which contains interlinked divalent sulphur atoms. The action of the catalyst is assisted by a co-catalyst comprising metallic Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg, Cu, Co, Ni, Al, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ca, Cr or a salt, alkoxide or mercaptide thereof. The metal co-catalysts may be alloyed with the said tin. Also as co-catalyst there may be used bromine, iodine, interhalogen compounds, compounds which liberate iodine at the reaction temperature or, when not present as a reactant, an alkyl iodide. A solvent which is an aliphatic or cyclic ether may be employed. The reaction is performed at 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. |
