titleOfInvention Block copolymer and process
abstract Block copolymers may be prepared from (i) a polyester of M.P. at least 200 DEG C. and having the formula <FORM:1081452/C3/1> and (ii) a polyamide of M.P. at least 175 DEG C. and having the formula (A) H{HN-(CH2)c-CO}mOH; <FORM:1081452/C3/2> <FORM:1081452/C3/3> <FORM:1081452/C3/4> where A is a bivalent aromatic radical and a, d, e and f are each 2 to 10; c is 3 to 10; m is 10 to 300; x is 10 to 150 and y is 10 to 200 by melting (i) and (ii) in such proportions that the ratio of OH end units in (i) to NH2 and units in (ii) is from 2:1 to 1:2, maintaining the melt under reduced pressure to vaporize volatile matter until the copolymer formed is insoluble in boiling o-dichlorobenzene, and removing the molten product before its melting point drops below 200 DEG C. or the M.P. of the lowest melting of (i) and (ii), whichever is higher. The polymers may be spun into fibres useful in tyres. Various polyester- and polyamide-forming reactants are listed. In the Examples (i) is polyethylene terephthalate and (ii) is nylon 6 or 66.
