A testing tube for ascertaining the alcohol content of exhaled air comprises within the tube a reagent d e. g. permanganate or chromato sulphuric acid, which changes colour to indicate the alcohol content of a predetermined amount of exhaled air, the amount of air being determined by the presence of a water-responsive substance b e. g. cobalt nitrate, which changes colour on absorption of a certain amount of water vapour from the exhaled air thus indicating the volume of air passed through the tube, since the water content of exhaled air is substantially constant. In use caps at the ends of the tube are removed and air is blown through the tube from the end g which is provided with a non-return valve h. When the substance b changes colour the requisite volume of air has been blown through the tube and the reagent d can be observed.
