abstract | The invention relates to lubricants consisting of, or comprising a major amount of an amide of the general formula <FORM:1080520/C4-C5/1> wherein X is a C3- 12 hydrocarbylene group; R1 and R2 are each a C3- 12 alkyl or C3- 12 cyclo-alkyl group or an aryl group having at most 12 carbon atoms; and R is a hydrogen atom or a group of the general formula <FORM:1080520/C4-C5/2> wherein R3 and R4 are each a C3- 12 alkyl or C3- 12 cycloalkyl group or an aryl group having at most 12 carbon atoms. Preferably, there is at least 75% of the weight of the amide based on the weight of the lubricant which may also include an anti-oxidant, e.g. a phenol or amine. Specified amides are N,N-di-n-propylbenzamide, N - butyl - N - phenyl - n - octanamide; N,N-di - n - butyllauramide; N,N - di - n - octyl benzamide; N - cyclohexyl - N - propylbenz - amide; N - N - di - cyclohexylbenzamide; N - n - hexyl - N - n - propyl isophthalamide; N,N - di - n - propyl - para - tertbutylbenzamide; bis - (N,N - di - n - hexyl) adipamide; bis - (N,N - di - n - propyl) phthalamide; and bis-(N,N-di-n-propyl) isophthalamide.
