titleOfInvention | New cyclic phosphonic compounds |
abstract | A detergent composition comprises cyclic tetraphosphonic compounds of the general formula <FORM:1079340/C4-C5/1> where the radicals R, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, sodium potassium, ammonium, substituted ammonium or alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms and anionic, nonionic, ampholytic, cationic or zwitterionic detergents. The sodium and potassium salts of the cyclic tetraphosphonic acid are valuable as sequestering agents and builders in the detergent compositions. Usual additives such as alkaline materials, silicates, sulphates, germicides, suds builders or suppressors, dyes, perfumes and carboxymethyl cellulose may be present.ALSO:Novel compounds of the general formula <FORM:1079340/C2/1> wherein the radicals R, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen, sodium, potassium, ammonium, substituted ammonium or alkyl having 1-6 carbon atoms, are prepared by reacting acetic anhydride with phosphorous acid in a molar ratio of 0.5:1 to 1.3:1 at 120-160 DEG C., for 1-20 hours to yield the free acid which may be neutralized with a base or esterified with an appropriate trialkyl orthoformate. The cyclic acid can be hydrolysed to form ethane - 1 - hydroxy - 1,1 - diphosphonic acid. The sodium and potassium salts of the cyclic acids are used as sequestering agents and builders in detergent compositions. |
