titleOfInvention Polymerisation process
abstract Polypropylene containing no crystalline structural units other than units of syndiotactic polypropylene detectable by the most sensitive known methods of analysis, i.e. NMR, is made by effecting the polymerization in the presence of a catalyst system comprising VCl4, a Lewis base and an aluminium dialkyl halide of the formula AlR2X, where R is a C1- 8 alkyl group, and X a halogen atom, and under such conditions that the temperature of the reaction mixture does not exceed - 70 DEG C. during polymerization. In the catalyst the mole ratio of Lewis base to VCl4 is between 0.05:1 and 5:1, and the mole ratio of the aluminium dialkyl halide to VCl4 is between 1:1 and 20:1. The catalyst may be "aged" for 20-30 mins. Specified Lewis bases are phenol, anisole, phenetole, n-propyl phenyl ether, tetrahydrofurane, tetrahydropyran, aniline, N-substituted aniline, quinoline, pyridine, pyrrole, and diethyl ether. The Al-compound may be aluminium diethyl chloride or ethylisobutylchloride.
