titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the production of detergent alkylate |
abstract | Detergent alkylate is obtained by dimerizing in the liquid phase a normal mono-olefin in the C5-C8 range in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a synthetic petroleum cracking catalyst and a salt of a transition metal stable under the catalyst activation and regeneration conditions and alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon with a fraction of the product in the C10-C16 range. The starting olefin may be a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene and/or n-butene, the product of dehydrogenating a n-paraffin or a product from thermal cracking, and should be free of sulphur, acetylenes and dienes and preferably of aromatics. The catalyst is preferably silica with alumina, magnesia, zirconia and boria and impregnated with a chloride, bromide or sulphate of nickel, cobalt, manganese and/or chromium. It is activated by heating to 350-650 DEG C. and regenerated by oxidation at 300-600 DEG C. Dimerization is effected at 50-100 DEG C., 20-500 p.s.i.g. and 0.1-10 vol./vol./hr. The dimer is separated by distillation and used to alkylate benzene using aluminium chloride or hydrogen fluoride in the liquid phase at - 20 DEG to 100 DEG C. |
