titleOfInvention | Removal of carcinogens from gas streams |
abstract | Carcinogens are removed from a gas stream by contacting the gas stream with a compound which is a salt of a tetravalent metal and a hydroxy-substituted aliphatic acid, a hydrate of the tertavalent metal, or a carbonated hydrate of the metal. Preferred metals are zirconium, titanium, hafnium and tin. Columbium and tantaeum may also be used. As applied to tobacco smoke filters, a carrier of fibrous and/or particulate material is sprayed with 0.002-8.0% of p the compound, calculated as metal, based on the weight of the carrier. The filter may contain 0.1-4.0% based on the weight of the carrier of a humectant, e.g. a polyhydric alcohol. The same proportions of compound may be used in filters for exhaust fumes from an internal combustion engine. The compound may also be mixed with tobacco in an amount of from 0.001-4.0%, calculated as oxide, based on the weight of the tobacco. The compound may also be used in removing carcinogens from smoke used to treat food products, air conditioning units, and in an air intake systems of motor vehicles. Quantitative examples are given relating to tobacco smoke filters, tobacco compositions and a filter for an internal combustion engine exhaust. Compounds specifically mentioned in the examples include zirconium diammonium citrate, carbonated zirconium hydrate, carbonated titanium hydrate, zirconium tartrate, carbonated hafium hydrate, and titanium tartrate. |
