titleOfInvention High-molecular compounds containing isocyanate groups
abstract A process for preparing high-molecular compounds containing isocyanate groups or isocyanate-donor groups comprises reacting high-molecular compounds with a molecular weight above 1000 devoid of active hydrogen atoms and containing olefinic or acetylenic carbon-carbon bonds, with sulphenyl halide isocyanates or with substances capable of yielding these. Suitable high-molecular compounds include modified linseed oils, polyesters containing olefinic or acetylenic unsaturation in the acid- or alcohol moiety, copolymers of saturated and olefinically-unsaturated aldehydes, natural rubber, gutta-percha, and homopolymers and co-polymers of diolefins, acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene, dichlorobutadiene, and acrylonitrile. A number of sulphenyl chloride isocyanates are specified and may be prepared as described in Specification 1,078,224. In the examples 1,4-phenylisocyanate sulphenyl chloride is reacted with (1) 1,4-cis-polybutadiene in toluene, (2) a copolymer of isoprene and isobutylene in carbon tetrachloride, (3) polyisoprene in n-hexane, and (4) a butadiene-styrene block polymer in toluene. The products may be cross-linked by reaction with bifunctional compounds having reactive hydrogen atoms, e.g. hexamethylene diamine, and these products can be employed as lacquers, films, foils, printing rollers, or as impact-resisting plastics materials or as rubbers. The products may also be modified by reacting them with alcohols or amines, a number of which are exemplified.
