titleOfInvention Manufacture of polymer compositions
abstract Polymeric compositions are obtained by polymerizing one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an aqueous medium in the presence of a free-radical yielding polymerization catalyst, a dispersion of a solid additive in an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid containing 6 or more carbon atoms being added to the aqueous medium and pH of the aqueous medium being reduced to less than 7.0 before the polymeric material is separated from the aqueous medium. The dispersion may be added to the aqueous medium before, during, or after the polymerization. Suitable additives include stabilizers, e.g. dibutyl tin S,S1-bis(nonylthioglycollate), tris(nonylphenyl)phosphite, lead stearate, tribasic lead sulphate, calcium stearate, and cadmium laurate, pigments, e.g. TiO2, cadmium sulphides and selenides, chromates, Prussian Blue, Brunswick Green, ultra-marines, and carbon blacks, organic pigments, e.g. copper phthalo-cyanine, quinacridones, diazo pigments, and vat pigments, e.g. indanthrone, flavanthrone, and perylene derivatives. Suitable acid salts include the alkali metal and ammonium salts of capric, caprylic, caproic, lauric, stearic and oleic acids. Monomers specified are:-vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, chloroprene, methyl-, ethyl-, and 2-ethyl hexyl-acrylates, methyl methacrylate, styrene, butadiene, acrylonitrile. Both suspension and emulsion polymerization techniques may be used, various conventional catalysts, dispersing agents, and emulsifying agents being used. In the examples, vinyl chloride homopolymers (Exs. 1-21) and copolymers with vinyl acetate (Ex. 22) are prepared, of which the following are comparative examples:-(Ex. 1) no acid salt, (Ex. 4) sodium benzoate used, (Ex. 6) sodium valerate used, (Ex. 9) sodium rosinate used, (Ex. 10) cetyl pyridinium chloride used, (Ex. 11) sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and the sodium salt of sulphonated methyl oleate used, (Exs. 13 and 17) pH greater than 7.0 employed, and (Ex. 20) calcium stearate used.
