titleOfInvention Process for preparing a detergent
abstract Process for the preparation of a detergent comprises reacting a gaseous stream containing an inert gas and SO3 with an olefin, preferably an alpha-olefin containing 2 to 40 carbon atoms, the ratio of SO3 to olefin being from 0.92 mol to 1 mole, and thereafter reacting said sulphonation product with at least the stoichiometric amount of a basic reagent to obtain the corresponding basic reaction product of the said sulphonation product. Many examples of organic and inorganic bases are given. The usual builders added to detergents can be included as well as dyes, perfumes and tarnish inhibitors.ALSO:A detergent is prepared by bringing together a gaseous stream containing an inert gas and SO3 with a C2- 40 olefin, the molar ratio of SO3 to olefin being maintained within a range of 0.92 to one mole of SO3 per mol of olefin and the volume per cent of SO3 in the gaseous stream being within the range of 1 to 20, at a temperature of 0 DEG to 100 DEG C., and thereafter reacting the sulphonation product with at least the stoichiometric amount of a basic reagent, to obtain the corresponding basic reaction product of the sulphonation product. In the sulphonation process a mixture of alkene-sulphonic acids and a sultone is believed to be formed initially and the sultone reacts with the basic reagent to give a hydroxy alkane sulphonate. The sulphonation product is finally dried to obtain the aforesaid detergent. The olefins used are preferably alpha-olefins having 10 to 22 carbon atoms and many are specified including cycloaliphatic olefins. Basic reagents include organic bases such as salts of carboxylic acids, metal salts of hydrocarbons, imines, amines, aminoalcohols, quaternary ammonium hydroxides, salts of alcohols, salts of amines, salts of imines, salts of imides and salts of amides, and inorganic bases such as ammonia, hydroxides of alkali and alkaline earth metals, carbonates and bicarbonates of alkali metals sodamide and hydroxylamine. Many examples of each type are given.
