abstract The invention relates to methine dyes of the formula <FORM:1075653/C4-C5/1> <FORM:1075653/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1075653/C4-C5/3> OR <FORM:1075653/C4-C5/4> where n is 1-3, m is 1 or 2, g is 0 or 1, d is 1 or 2, R and R1 represent alkyl, cycloalkyl or substituted alkyl groups containing 1-18 C or an aryl or substituted aryl group, R3 represents an alkyl or substituted alkyl group of 1 to 12 C or an allyl group, R4 and R5 represent an alkyl or substituted alkyl e.g. cyanoalkyl group containing 1 to 6 C, X represents an acid anion and Z and Q represent the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete a heterocyclic nucleus containing 5 or 6 atoms in the hetero cyclic ring. In the examples Z completes a benzoxazole, benzothiazole, dialkyl indolenine, thiazoline or 2-quinoline nucleus and Q completes a rhodanine or 2-thiobarbituric acid nucleus. The dyes are prepared by the usual methods employing the imidazo quinoxalinium salts described in Specification 1,075,654.
