titleOfInvention | Dyes |
abstract | The invention relates to dyes obtained by heating a mixture comprising a barbituric acid or thiobarbituric acid of the formula <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/1> in which R and R1 each represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, and W represents O or S, with a compound of the formula CH3(CH2)n.C(OC2H5)3 wherein n is 0 or 1. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent e.g. pyridine or a dehydrating solvent such as acetic anhydride. These dyes may be converted into complex dyes by heating in the presence of a solvent and a basic condensing agent with an intermediate of the formula <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/2> <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/4> <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/5> or <FORM:1075344/C4-C5/6> where m is 0, 1 or 2, R2 represents an alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl group, X is an acid anion; R3 is an alkyl or aryl group, q is 0 or 1 and Z and Q represents the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete certain specified heterocyclic nuclei containing 5 or 6 atoms in the heterocyclic ring; or by heating with a primary amine, piperidine, ammonia, fuming sulphuric acid or bromine. Q may complete a heterocyclic nucleus containing a sulphone group e.g. 4-thiazolidone - 1.1 - dioxide or 3(2H) - thianaphthenone - 1,1 - dioxide. In the examples Z complete a benzothiazole, benzoxazole or 2-quinoline, nucleus and Q completes a barbituric acid nucleus. |
