abstract |
Ketones and/or aldehydes are produced by heating at least one fatty acid with a catalyst comprising calcined magnesite, formic acid being present when an aldehyde is the desired product. Suitable fatty acids are the C1- 22 acids. The process is preferably carried out by passing the acid(s), suitably in the presence of an inert carrier gas, over the catalyst at 300 DEG to 500 DEG C. In a modification, the fatty acids used are used in the form of volatile esters. |
