abstract | A penicillin-placenta complex is obtained by contacting penicillin with a salt complex obtained by treating an acidic aqueous alco holic extract of placenta with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, which is (a) added to the residual extract obtained after the separation of the precipitate produced on adjusting the pH of the alcoholic extract to alkaline conditions by addition of a base, or (b) added to the alcoholic extract followed by addition of sufficient base to achieve an alkaline pH. The penicillin may be any therapeutically acceptable penicillin, e.g. procaine penicillin. The placenta may be human, cow or any other mammal placenta.ALSO:A medicinal preparation, effective in the treatment of osteoarthrites, is prepared by treating an acidic aqueous alcoholic extract of placenta with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt and thereafter adjusting the pH to alkaline conditions by means of a base. Alternatively, the metal salt is added to the residual extract obtained after separating the precipitate produced by adjusting the pH to alkaline conditions by means of a base. The salts may be inorganic e.g. KCl, K3PO4, K2HPO4, K2CO3, Na2HPO4, Na3PO4, Na2SO4 CaCO3, MgCO3, magnesium thiosulphate and magnesium trisilicate, or organic e.g. potassium gluconate, potassium citrate, potassium salicylate, potassium lactate, sodium benzoate, calcium gluconate, calcium levulinate, calcium mandelate, calcium methionate, magnesium salicylate, strontium lactate and strontium citrate. The medicinal preparation may be mixed with any therapeutically acceptable form of penicillin, e.g. procaine penicillin G, to form a complex. The placenta may be human, cow or other mammal placenta. |
