titleOfInvention Latex compositions
abstract A self-curing latex composition for backing carpets is produced by copolymerizing an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid with a diolefine and an alkenyl aromatic compound at a pH of less than 7 in the substantial absence of heavy metal ions, and, subsequently to polymerization, increasing the pH of the latex so obtained to a value greater than 7. Monomers exemplified are itaconic acid, acrylic acid, butadiene and styrene; others specified are methacrylic acid, isoprene and a -methyl styrene. The polymerization is effected in aqueous emulsion with potassium persulphate as the catalyst and in the presence of a sequestering agent, an emulsifying agent, a pH buffer and tertiary-dodecyl mercaptan. After polymerization, ammonia is added to adjust the pH. A composition was produced by incorporating in the prepared latex an aqueous paste of whiting and sodium hexametaphosphate, an antioxidant dispersion, and a solution of sodium polyacrylate as a thickener.ALSO:A self-curing latex composition for backing carpets is produced by copolymerizing an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid with a diolefin and an alkenyl aromatic compound at a pH less than 7 in the substantial absence of heavy metal ions, and, subsequently to polymerization, increasing the pH of the latex so obtained to a value greater than 7.
