titleOfInvention Diacyl phloroglucinol derivatives
abstract The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:1072673/C2/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or a lower alkyl group (containing up to 3 carbon atoms) or a halogen atom and R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are (a) straight or branched chain saturated alkyl groups containing from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, preferably from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, or (b) phenyl alkyl groups wherein the alkyl chain contains from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, with the exception that when R1 is hydrogen or methyl, R2 and R3 are not both methyl, and the preparation thereof by reacting a phloroglucinol compound of the general formula <FORM:1072673/C2/2> with an acid or acid anhydride of the general formula R2COOH or (R2CO)2O respectively when R2 and R3 are the same, or successively with acids or acid anhydrides of the general formulae R2COOH and R3COOH or (R2CO)2O and (R3CO)O2 respectively when R2 and R3 are different, the reaction being effected in the presence of an esterification catalyst, for example boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, preferably in an inert organic solvent or, in the case where R1 is halogen in the first general formula above, by direct halogenation of a compound of general formula <FORM:1072673/C2/3> preferably in an inert organic solvent. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-bacterial, antifungal and antihelminthic action comprise a compound of the first general formula above, including the excepted compounds, and a non-toxic carrier, and are in conventional form for oral, topical or parenteral administration.
