titleOfInvention Polyethers and polyurethanes therefrom
abstract Hydroxyl group-containing polyethers are prepared from an alkylene oxide and a compound containing at least 2 sites per molecule at which growth of hydroxyl-terminated alkylene oxide polymer chains may be initiated, by a process characterized in that after the start of the reaction there is added an agent capable of providing a new chain growth initiating site on a molecule containing at least one other site, the agent being used in a proportion of at least 10 mol per cent based on the total amount of initiating compound and agent. The agent may be a compound containing at least two active hydrogen atoms, e.g. water, glycols, amines, carboxylic acids, ammonia &c., or at least one epoxide group and at least one hydroxyl group, or at least one epoxide group and at least one halogen atom per molecule. The agent may be identical with the growth initiating compound. The agent may be added as a solution in the alkylene oxide. The polyethers, optionally in admixture with other polyhydroxy compounds, may be reacted with organic polyisocyanates, optionally in the presence of gas-generating agents to give polyurethanes. Catalysts, surface active agents and other additives may be present. In the examples (1) trimethylolpropane and propylene oxide are added to a mixture of glycerol, KOH and water, (2) epichlorhydrin and propylene oxide are added to a mixture of propylene glycol and KOH, (3) glycidol and propylene oxide are added to propylene glycol and KOH. The products are treated with adipic acid, water, kieselguhr, active carbon and 2-(a -methylcyclohexyl)-4,6 -dimethylphenol and filtered and are reacted with a mixture of tolylene 2,4- and 2,6-diisocyanate in the presence of stannous octoate, triethylene diamine, water and a siloxane-oxyalkylene block copolymer to give polyurethane foams.
